Habitat Choptank's Latest News...

Bringing Help and Hope to Haiti

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti on January 12, 2010—just 10 miles west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Thousands of buildings and homes were destroyed, and the number of those affected is in the millions.

Habitat International's Response in Haiti

Although the full toll of homes severly damaged or destroyed is yet unknown, Habitat for Humanity International has begun responding by addressing immediate relief efforts and long-term shelter solutions for low-income families.

Immediate response to this disaster will include working with Habitat Haiti to restore its capacity to fully participate in the recovery efforts.  Through all aspect of the work, Habitat International will cultivate partnerships with local residents and with other humanitarian organizations that can multiply the effectiveness of the response.

Just as Habitat International helped to build homes and hope in communities along the Gulf Coast and in New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Habitat is mobilzing available resources to help in Haiti.

What You Can Do

Pray - for a ll the people of Haiti, for the Habitat team members - some of who remained unaccounted for - and for all the humanitarian efforts.  Habitat is not recruiting volunteers at this time and will not do so until more stability can be brought to the country.  Until then, visit the Habitat International website to stay up on the latest news about the response effort.
